“The guys behind the counter and I immediately launched into a humorous, protracted, Englishanese attempt to understand what the hell just happened. Through judicious fumbling, and after a great deal of precise hand-waving and mangled pronouns, it turned out to be something like this:
At this cafe, you get what the person before you ordered. The next person gets what you ordered.”

The White House – Blog Post – Stopping Conflict-related Sexual Violence Against Women and Children
“…despite passage of these two important resolutions, conflict-related sexual violence against women and children continues to plague many areas around the world. For example, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, approximately 1,100 rapes are being reported each month, with an average of 36 women and girls raped every day. In addition to these rapes and gang rapes, of which there have been hundreds of thousands over the duration of the conflict, the perpetrators frequently mutilate the women in the course of the attacks. The measure adopted yesterday, Resolution 1888, identifies specific steps that the United Nations and member-states can and should take to improve the UN response to sexual violence committed during situations of armed conflict. It calls on the UN Secretary General to appoint a Special Representative to lead, coordinate, and advocate for efforts to end conflict-related sexual violence.”

And then liquid of gold reflecting blue began to drown me from above, building from the sky down. I was taken by hand from sunrises to sunsets, past horizon radars from orange to gray. And as the liquid began…

Bodies pile up in Detroit morgue; poor can’t afford burial – Oct. 1, 2009
“Lifelong Detroit residents Darrell and Cheryl Vickers understand this firsthand. On a chilly September morning they had to visit the freezer to identify the body of Darrell’s aunt, Nancy Graham — and say their goodbyes. The couple, already financially strained, don’t have the $695 needed to cremate her. Other family members, mostly in Florida, don’t have the means to contribute, either. In fact, when Darrell’s grandmother passed recently, his father paid for the cremation on a credit card — at 21% interest. So the Vickers had to leave their aunt behind. Body number 67.”

“So, consider this the beginning, these words an introduction. If you don’t already know him, let me tell you about my hero. His mama named him Tony. The streets crowned him Tempt. The disease said he was finished. But me and my crew, we call him EyeOne: the legend, the first man to bomb with his eyes.”
